Chronicles of the House
A narrator lights a candle and opens a large, leather-bound book. She begins to read, describing a marvelous house and the people who live there.
This project began as an exercise in letting a story tell itself. It began in an instant, with no premeditation, mid-journal entry. For a long time, I wrote about the house and the people who live there as a sort of animate dollhouse: the denizens of the house surprised me by discovering new rooms in the house and new things about themselves and each other. Eventually, I read an entry of two out to a friend, who was touched by the gentleness of the world I was exploring. In such times as these, where every day can seem like a barely-survivable tempest, I humbly offer a port in the storm, or perhaps just a bit of softer water. I offer you the House.
