Nesting
"Nesting" shares a glimpse of the land that the Northern Neck Conservancy in Virginia is caretaking.
"Nesting" is a poem describing my afternoon with the staff of the Northern Neck Conservancy in Virginia.
I was selected to be the poet for the Northern Neck Conservancy to represent them in the poetry anthology, "Writing the Land: Virginia." This particular piece captures my reflection of the time I spent with the staff and the land that my husband and I had the opportunity to tour with them. As I do not generally write about nature, it was a refreshing muse this land that the conservancy is fighting to preserve.

About the Artist
Kristina Hamlett is the author of She Lives Here, a collection of poetry and prose, published by L10 Press in 2021 and the E-Book Journal What I Love About You: A Guided Journal to Writing Your Proposal and Vows. Kristina was selected as a poet to represent the Northern Neck and three of her poems were published as part of Writing the Land: Virginia poetry anthology. Kristina was among 15 women selected in the country to participate in The Storyteller Research Project: Digital Storytelling for Women of Color at The University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa. Her audiovisual story and poem, “A Walking Color” was featured in the digital performance journal, Liminalities. She facilitates workshops including Get Lifted: Using Music & Poetry to Find Your Light and Our Whole Black Selves: A BIPOC Only Yoga and Writing Workshop. In 2021, she created and hosted “From the Page to the Mic: A Poetry Reading Series” with Henrico County Public Library. Her passion for writing extended into aiding people coming home from incarceration where prior to the pandemic, she taught creative non-fiction primarily using poetry as prompts. In 2022, she was accepted into the Louisville Book Festival and presented “This Poet’s Life” as part of their poetry programming. She was a Rainbow Fund Scholarship winner for the 2022 Her Spirit Writers Retreat in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
