Touching

This is an audio recording of a vignette, a scene in a grocery store between my adopted mom and myself.

This is an audio recording of a vignette, a scene in a grocery store between my adopted mom and myself. It was originally going to be part of my upcoming memoir, but was one of the many chapters I had to cut for space. It is a poignant scene despite the simple setting, addressing themes of family, connection, physical touch, and healing.

My memoir is a story of overcoming struggles in childhood to then find deep healing with my best friend’s family at age 19. They are from Iran and welcomed me into their home in Canada with open arms, informally adopting me, and becoming my chosen family. Even though we have different cultural backgrounds, we had an instant connection that changed our perceptions of “family".
